In recent years, the American GPS system has become very popular and widely known. In the near future, there will be equivalent with the European Galileo system and probably a Chinese counterpart with the COMPASS system.

Provided that all such systems are fully interoperable and users can access without constraint, the joint use of these systems will improve the reliability of applications that will use them. Nevertheless, the issue of reliable location and navigation in buildings and "pedestrian" navigation in major urban centers remains.
